An interview with freeskier Oliver Andorfer: from the equipment to the TOP SPOTS!

What is important to observe on a high altitude ski tour?

As the conditions in the high altitude areas can sometimes be very different to those at low altitude, it is particularly important to listen to the weather forecast and to know what the avalanche situation is like! The material and clothing must also be suited to the demands and profile of the tour: is it ascent or descent orientated, will it last several days?

What are your favourite places, your TOP SPOTS, for mountaineering and free riding?

In Austria! We have everything the tour heart desires! From Alpine orientated tours with physically more difficult ascents or descents to more relaxing tours! There are tours in Austria to suit all weather and snow conditions!

What equipment do you always carry with you on your tours?

  • Day tours: Safety equipment (PIEPS, shovel, probe, first aid kit), change of clothing, ESKA gloves (for ascent & descent), climbing iron, possibly also a pick, sun protection, sunglasses, gloves, food, liquids.

  • Tours lasting several days: Safety equipment (PIEPS, shovel, probe, first aid kit), change of clothing (for the tour, for the accommodation), ESKA gloves (for ascent & descent), climbing iron, possibly also a pick, sun protection, sunglasses, gloves, food, liquids, charging lead for mobile etc. ,shoes, biwak tent, money.

  • Piste tours (training tour): warm jacket, warm ESKA gloves, liquids, food.

How do you choose your tours? Are there any special requirements?

They’re chosen according to the outside conditions, preferences, challenges, group size or sometimes just depending on the available time. Regardless of whether you choose more challenging or standard tours – each tour involves various challenges and this is exactly what makes it all so appealing!
