THE JUPITER EVOLUTION.

, posted by

The Jupiter gloves, together with Mars, marked the start of the developments in ESKA® firefighting gloves which began in 1982. Since its foundation in 1912, ESKA® has been continuously manufacturing gloves for firefighters which are made out of leather and customised according to the customers’ specific requirements. Certification, as is standard today, did not exist back then.

Until 1982, firefighting gloves were made solely out of leather, partly without any lining, and in poor quality. The gloves were more like work gloves, two dimensional, in gunn cut and from China or, as was usually the case, Pakistan. Mr Loos Senior then thought about how firefighters’ hands could be protected really well in their dangerous work. First of all, he purchased various products which were available on the market out of normal cowhide, two dimensional and in gunn cut.

It was quite normal to sustain injuries whilst using these gloves – the below photos are from an old newspaper article:

JUPITER I

The star of Jupiter by ESKA® was launched in 1982 and was the first firefighting glove in the world with the 3D design technology. Jupiter I was made out of various fire resistant components for example Kermel® as outer fabric and Schoeller material as trim. The gloves achieved the highest values according to the certification regulations of that time and were a best seller.

JUPITER II

Jupiter II with Kevlar® knit lining and a FR 2 strap system already featured the 100% water and windproof as well as breathable GORE-TEX® membrane with three layers which is permanently attached by means of the ESKA® EU and US patent.

The highlights of the third generation included coated Kevlar® for heat, laceration and puncture protection, a heat and shock absorber as well as non-flammable Kermel®-HTA for the back of the hand and gauntlet. The lining was initially out of knit Kevlar® but then Mr Loos Senior developed a special Kevlar® knit lining with silver threads (anti-static, anti-bacterial, temperature regulating).

Today the Jupiter surpasses all that was before. The newly developed cut protection lining made of Kevlar® with steel fibreglass and silver threads guarantees maximum safety even in extreme situations and achieves the highest cut protection level 5. The backhand made of Kevlar® with silicon carbon coating reaches the highest abrasion level 4. Despite the highest protection category, the Jupiter is exceptionally flexible and offers wearers agreeable and perfect comfort in wearing.
